Bushwalking & Trails
Wollongong's perfect positioning between the escarpment and the sea make it home to endless walking trails perfect for beginners through to avid hikers. Some of our favourites are explored below.
Royal national park
Located on the southern fringe of metropolitan Sydney, Royal National Park is the second oldest national park in the world, offering spectacular scenery from sub-tropical rainforests and sandstone heathlands, to dramatic coastal cliffs and unspoilt ocean beaches.
Royal is home to many great walks that hug the park's coastline, taking you along the cliffs, beaches and escarpments ranging from 1km (suggested time 30 minutes) to 26km (suggested time 2 days).
There are several commercial businesses who offer guided day and overnight walks of Royal National Park. We recommend Sydney Coast Walks. Visit their website for more information on guided and self-guided walks through the Royal National Park.
illawarra escarpment & OTHER NEARBY trails
The Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area along with other locations in the region are perfect for a bush walk, casual jog, cycle or family picnic.
The escarpment that wraps around Wollongong is home to dramatic sandstone cliffs and a medley of different forest types from sub-tropical rainforests to olive-green eucalypts and towering cedars. With two accessible mountains, a vast array of beautiful birdlife and strong Aboriginal heritage, this is a must-explore on any Wollongong visit.

Wollongong's Blue Mile
Wollongong's Blue Mile located along Cliff Road is the best vantage point from which to absorb the beauty of the South Pacific Ocean to the east and the magnificent Illawarra Escarpment to the west.
The newly constructed board walk along the harbour and foreshore are perfect for a casual walk or jog. You can even stop for a coffee or delicious lunch at one of the many seaside dining options along the way.
