The descent into Stanwell Park is one of those moments that stays with you. Whether you’re arriving by train, on foot, or winding down from the escarpment by car, the coast reveals itself slowly and then all at once – dramatic cliffs plunging into the ocean, a lush green reserve opening onto golden sand, and hang gliders tracing lazy arcs across the sky above Bald Hill.

This is not a destination you stumble upon accidentally. You have to want to be here. And those who make the effort find one of the most quietly extraordinary stretches of the NSW coast – a collection of villages and surrounds that rewards the curious traveller at every turn, from the clifftop orchards of Darkes Forest to the heritage arts spaces of Clifton and the serene coastal trails that wind through it all.

Bring comfortable shoes, clear your afternoon, and follow wherever the road takes you.

A Day in Stanwell Park & Surrounds

Morning

The best way to start a day in Stanwell Park is from the top. Bald Hill Lookout at sunrise is one of those experiences that is genuinely difficult to put into words – the sky shifting and glowing over the escarpment, hang gliders and paragliders already catching the morning thermals, and the coast stretching endlessly in both directions below. Arrive early, find a quiet spot, and give yourself time to simply take it in.

From there, coffee is non-negotiable. Earthwalker & Co is a warm, welcoming café with that easy, community feel that defines the best village spots along this stretch of coast. For something a little more indulgent, Saltie Dog Coffee & Crepes is the kind of find that makes a morning feel like a celebration – exceptional coffee paired with sweet crepes that make lingering feel like the most sensible thing you could do.

Late Morning

With coffee in hand, the choices multiply. Sea Cliff Bridge is the iconic starting point for many – a walk across this engineering marvel with the ocean churning below and the escarpment rising above is as dramatic as it sounds, and worth every step.

From there, the Wodi Wodi Track winds through coastal bushland with the kind of ancient, unhurried beauty that makes an hour feel like ten minutes.

For something completely different, Otford Farm Horse Riding has been welcoming equestrian enthusiasts since 1961 – a hands-on riding experience through the escarpment landscape with over thirty well-behaved horses and a setting that feels genuinely timeless.

And for those drawn to the arts, the Clifton School of Arts is one of those beautiful heritage spaces that houses rotating exhibitions and creative workshops – well worth checking what’s on before you visit.

Afternoon

Hungry by now, the lunch options here are genuinely worth the drive alone. Loaf Cafe in Stanwell Park is the kind of neighbourhood spot where the sandwiches are exceptional and the atmosphere is easy and unhurried – perfect for a casual midday stop before the afternoon adventures begin.

For something more elevated, The Imperial at Clifton is one of the great dining experiences of the Illawarra – perched above the sea with views that go on forever, a long lazy lunch here over wine and outstanding food is the kind of afternoon that makes the rest of the week feel very far away.

From there, head north to Darkes Forest and Glenbernie Orchard – a beautiful working orchard where cider tasting, fruit picking, and cheese boards combine into one of the most unexpected and delightful experiences in the region. The kind of place that feels like a genuine discovery no matter how many people have told you about it.

Late Afternoon – Evening

As the afternoon softens, Wombarra Bowlo is the perfect place to let the day unwind completely. Barefoot bowls in one of the most peaceful settings in the Illawarra, with gorgeous sunsets and a menu of outstanding Thai food that makes staying for dinner an easy decision. Founded decades ago and still a genuine community institution, this is the Illawarra at its most relaxed and its most charming.

For those who simply cannot bring themselves to leave – and after a day like this, the feeling is entirely understandable – Tumbling Waters Retreat is the answer. A luxurious boutique hotel for couples seeking a peaceful, romantic coastal escape, with a Dining on the Edge experience featuring a curated Chef’s Menu paired with stunning coastal views. The kind of stay that turns a day trip into a proper escape.
