There’s something quietly magnetic about Bulli. Perched at the foot of the Illawarra Escarpment, just ten minutes north of Wollongong’s CBD, this is a village that carries its history lightly – the grand sandstone buildings and heritage railway station are echoes of a proud coal mining past – while looking very confidently toward the future.

And what a future it’s shaping up to be. A gorgeous coastline, a thriving dining and drinks scene, a creative arts community, and a relaxed village energy that makes you wonder why you haven’t been coming here for years. Bulli is the kind of place that surprises people. Most visitors head straight for the coast – and the coast is absolutely worth it – but those who wander up to the village high street tend to find themselves making plans to come back.

A Day in Bulli

Morning

On a crisp winter morning, the coast calls early. There’s something about the Illawarra Escarpment framing the shoreline on a cold, clear day that feels almost cinematic – and the locals know it. Bulli Beach is a stunning stretch of sand that draws surfers to its breaks year-round, and Sandon Point is one of the region’s most beloved surf spots, with a raw, unhurried atmosphere that feels a world away from the city.

The Bulli Ocean Pool is a gem in any season – and if you’re brave enough to take a dip in winter, you’ll be in good company with the locals who wouldn’t have it any other way. For a post-swim pick-me-up, Bulli Beach Cafe sits just steps from the sand, with takeaway coffee and fresh juices that taste significantly better with salt air and ocean views.

Bulli mornings have a certain unhurried quality that’s worth setting an alarm for. If you’re waking up at Bulli Beach Tourist Park, breakfast doesn’t get much easier than 34 South Bulli – the on-site café opens at 6:30am and serves coffee and breakfast all day with the kind of beachside ease that makes a slow morning feel like a luxury.

For those venturing into the village, Bulli is spoiled for morning options. Stokes Lane by RUH brings a cool, considered café sensibility to the high street, while Park Road Garage has the kind of easy, welcoming energy that makes it a local institution.

For something a little different, Timbermill Cafe is a must – tucked within the Timbermill Studios, a transformed historic timber mill that now houses a thriving community of artists, makers, and creative businesses, the café serves fresh, locally sourced food in a setting that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else in the region. Pair your coffee with an almond croissant from Miller’s Local Bakehouse, where the pastry alone is reason enough to make the drive, or settle in for a proper brunch at The Fitz Cafe & Bar to set yourself up for the day ahead.

Afternoon

By lunchtime, make your way to Resin Brewing – one of Bulli’s standout destinations and a place that embodies everything the village is becoming. A paddle of craft beers, a relaxed atmosphere, and food that holds its own against the drinks menu. It’s the kind of spot where lunch has a habit of becoming the afternoon, and nobody seems to mind.

Before the day winds down, the village high street rewards a leisurely wander. Bulli Bunches is a beautiful local florist stocking exotic blooms, potted gifts, candles, and giftware – the kind of place you pop into for one thing and leave with three.

And if the Timbermill Studios caught your eye at breakfast, it’s worth a proper look around – the creative community housed within is a genuine reflection of the quiet artistic spirit that runs through this village.

Evening

As the sun drops behind the escarpment, Bulli’s evening pace is warm and unhurried. The Bulli Heritage Hotel is the kind of local that anchors a village – a historic pub with character to spare, an intimate live music scene, and the sort of atmosphere that makes a quiet weeknight feel like an occasion. Pull up a stool, order something from the menu, and let the night take its time.

For something more casual, Bulli Beach Cafe comes into its own in the evening – fresh pizzas, pasta, and fish and chips served just steps from the beach, with the kind of easy, no-fuss energy that makes a winter evening by the coast feel exactly right.
