Windows down, sea breeze in the air and kilometres of road to explore – it’s no wonder so many car ads are filmed in Wollongong! Wollongong’s main self-drive itinerary is known as Grand Pacific Drive – this picturesque drive forms a spine right along the region, taking in Wollongong’s northern beaches, cafes, the harbour and Lake Illawarra. Here are our top ways to explore Wollongong, all without leaving your car:
- Starting at Bald Hill (our unofficial front doorstep), there is where your Wollongong journey begins. Make your way down Lawrence Hargrave Drive towards Stanwell Park. There’s plenty of delicious cafes to refuel your body in – plus, it’s not a road trip without snacks and of course, coffee!
- Head south and you’ll soon be starring in your own car ad as you drive across the ridiculously photogenic Sea Cliff Bridge. There’s also plenty of spots to pull over on the southern side so you can capture that insta-worthy shot.
- Once you’ve crossed Sea Cliff Bridge and taken your obligatory selfie on the bridge, continue south and Wollongong is ready! Head to Flagstaff Hill and check out our two iconic lighthouses. Wollongong is the only point on the eastern coast of Australia which has two lighthouses!
- Continue your journey along Grand Pacific Journey and head further south to surrounding towns including Lake Illawarra and Kiama, and beyond.
