Talk: Truth to Landscape

Speaking to the major works on loan from the National Collection, this talk considers Gascoigne’s love of the land, choice of materials, and the artist’s significance within the Australian art landscape.

Dr Deborah Hart is the National Gallery of Australia’s Head Curator of Australian Art. She is a highly experienced curator and widely published art historian. Since her appointment as senior curator of Australian Art in 2000, Hart has curated numerous exhibitions including Joy Hester and friends; Grace Cossington Smith: a retrospective; Andy and Oz: parallel visions (shown at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh); Fred Williams: infinite horizons; Arthur Boyd: Agony & ecstasy; Hugh Ramsay and Ethel Carrick. She has co-curated significant shows including: Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now; and Know My Name: Making it Modern. She is currently curating a major retrospective Rosalie Gascoigne opening in late October 2026 and is writing the accompanying publication highlighting the artist’s voice.
