Wollongong’s brand-new mountain biking adventure is here!
Stage 1 of the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network is officially open – and it’s a game-changer for riders in Wollongong and beyond. The Kembla Mountain Bike Trails deliver just under 20km of purpose-built tracks, offering something for everyone from cruisy weekend riders to hardcore MTB pros.
This is just the beginning. The full project, a joint initiative between NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Wollongong City Council, will eventually span more than 70km of trails across the escarpment. Carefully designed to protect the region’s natural and cultural values, it’s a network built for safe, sustainable fun on two wheels.
What to Expect on the Kembla Mountain Bike Trails
Set against the spectacular Illawarra Escarpment, the Kembla trails offer sweeping views, flowy loops, and plenty of adrenaline-pumping features. Riders can expect:
- 25 trails to explore, covering all skill levels

- 4 beginner trails (green)

- 13 intermediate trails (blue)

- 1 intermediate/hard trail (blue/black)

- 7 difficult trails (black)

- Features like bridges, jumps, berms, flyovers, and downhill runs

- Multiple access points and loop options to suit your style and stamina

Whether you’re new to the sport, chasing a family-friendly ride, or after black-diamond thrills, you’ll find a track with your name on it.
Safe, Sustainable, and Seriously Fun
The Illawarra Escarpment MTB Network is all about riding responsibly and leaving the trails better than you found them. Here’s how to ride right:
Ride safe
- Only ride when trails are open – check for closures before you head out.

- Always stick to signposted MTB trails. No bikes on walking tracks, closed trails, or forested areas.

- Match the trail rating to your ability and stay in control.

- Don’t stop where you can’t be seen or block the trail.

Share the ride
- Most trails are one-way – always check signs.

- Call out and slow down when passing, overtaking on the right.

- Look uphill before entering a trail and give way where needed.

Gear up
- Helmets are mandatory – a full-face is recommended.

- Gloves, eye protection, closed shoes, long sleeves, knee and elbow pads all help keep you safe.

- Check your bike before you roll: brakes, tyres, and tools for the trail.

- Pack spares, sun protection, and a phone.

Respect the trails
- Ride lightly and stay on the trail – it protects you and the environment.

- Clean your bike and shoes before arriving (there’s a cleaning station at the entry).

- Take your rubbish home, and don’t disturb wildlife or plants.

- Never skid, cut corners, build new tracks, or ride when trails are wet or muddy.
