The Employer stream of the Bike Friendly Business is designed for businesses (including governments, businesses, manufacturing, and retailing) who are willing to install or expand facilities and implement workplace programs that encourage and accommodate employees to ‘ride to work’.

Benefits to employers in fostering a cycle-friendly workplace include:

  • Employee health and productivity is increased.
  • Parking costs to the employer and/or the employee are reduced.
  • Transport costs and times for employees are reduced
  • Employer is able to project an environmentally friendly image
  • Employer is able to build their workplace’s “social capital”.

Accredited Employers will also be expected to:

  1. Maintain the required level of service, as described in the criteria into the future.
  2. Advise DW of the number of employees engaged in Ride to Work (on a regular basis). These Tracking Sheets will create some useful measurable metrics on employees taking up the Ride to Work opportunity afforded by the Employer.
  3. Provide information to their employees on W2022, Bike City and cycling activities in Wollongong – which may include posters, noticeboard/display space, and/or collateral distribution.
  4. Provide details on any specific cycling events staged by the Employer – for dissemination by DW on its digital assets.

Implementation

The following is an outline of a suggested implementation plan for consideration and discussion:

  • A Four-phase Accreditation Process is to be used:
    • Below is a Self-Check process, and you are asked to review your location against the Checklist and apply a score, reflecting the percentage of criteria that are met (to all or some degree).
    • Submit the completed Checklist and it will be reviewed by Destination Wollongong and a Cycling representative.
    • If the required score has been achieved – arrangements will be made for an inspection of the location by a DW and Cycling organisation representative.
    • If the location has achieved the required number of criteria – the business is nominated as a Bike Friendly Business – and is then presented with a certificate and BFB logo decal and/or sign, by a Bike City Spokesperson.
  • Bike Friendly Businesses will be listed on the DW and Bike City websites.
  • The listing will be used during W22 and into the future – especially when cycling events are in Wollongong.
  • The listing is also to be distributed to local and Sydney cycle clubs who would be asked to promote the accreditation process and accredited venues.
