So we’ve created a few sample itineraries below, outlining a few of Wollongong’s ‘must see and must do’ activities – there’s something for everyone from nature, adventure, family and of course, delicious eating out hot spots!

Kindly note, the sample itinerary below has been developed on the premise you're arriving in Wollongong from the north (Sydney). If you are coming from the South just do the reverse.

Day one

70km/90mins: Depart Sydney for Wollongong. Turn off from the A1 Princes Highway and travel through the magnificent Royal National Park; theRoyal National Park world’s second oldest. Or take the Helensburgh exit off the M1 Princes Motorway onto Lawrence Hargrave Drive. Hint: Following the clearly marked Grand Pacific Drive directional signage at the entrance to Royal National Park or from the Helensburgh exit onto Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

Stop off at Bald Hill Lookout and take in the magnificent view south to the famous Sea Cliff Bridge, Wollongong and beyond. Try your hand at a tandem hang glide with one of the local hang gliding companies.

3km/3mins: Visit Symbio Wildlife Park and see native Australian and exotic animals up close. Located only a short drive from Symbio is Glenbernie Orchard, a family owned farm where you can ‘pick your own’ fruits (seasonal and bookings are essential). 

7km/8mins: Stop at the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge and admire the sights over the South Pacific Ocean. Be adventurous and take in the Sea Cliff Bridge on the back of a Trike with Just Cruisin’ Motorcycle Tours – tell Steve we sent you!

8.5km/11mins: Take a walk along Austinmer Beach or enjoy a dip in one of the rock pools, enjoy a coffee at one of the many coastal cafés or browse the boutique shopping at Austinmer and Thirroul.

16km/30mins: Arrive in Wollongong. Visit Wollongong’s picturesque harbour and Flagstaff Hill or enjoy a leisurely walk along The Blue Mile boardwalk (bike rental available from the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach). Take a dip at one of our many patrolled beaches, with the famous North Wollongong beach patrolled 365 days a year.Sea Cliff Bridge

Relax and unwind whilst being surrounded by natural beauty at Wollongong’s Botanic Garden, offering unsurpassed views of our famous local landmark – Mt Keira. Enjoy a bushwalk in the Illawarra Escarpment or play a round of golf at one of the region’s picturesque courses.

Enjoy fresh local seafood at one of Wollongong's great restaurants along the foreshore or visit Wollongong’s “eat street” for a variety of cuisines. Or enjoy a drink after dinner with friends at one of the city’s small bars. Wollongong’s ‘Eat Street Market’ is held every Thursday evening in Crown Street Mall with a huge selection of delicious foods from around the world, and live music in a relaxed atmosphere.

Stay overnight in Wollongong. There is a variety of accommodation to suit all needs from international branded hotels and apartments, tourist parks to B&B’s and backpackers.

Day two

Check-out of your accommodation and enjoy breakfast at a near-by café, some of our favourites include Diggies, Lee & Me, Lower East Cafe & Pepe’s on the BeachSkydive Australia

5km/10mins: Spend time at Science Space, Early Start Discovery Space or Hangdog Climbing Gym – perfect for keeping the kids entertained. 

3km/5mins: For a real thrill experience the adrenaline of a tandem skydive with Skydive Australia at North Wollongong. 

9km/10mins: If you’re interested in culture or history, a visit to the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere, is a must! Don’t forget to visit the Wollongong Art Gallery, Illawarra Museum or The Australian Motorlife Museum.

85km/80mins: Depart Wollongong and return to Sydney.Diggies North Wollongong

Or if you wish to extend your trip along the unspoilt South Coast, depart Wollongong and continue along the spectacular Grand Pacific Drive to Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven or the Southern Highlands.
